The artist, Yasunari Ikenaga, is best known for his contemporary paintings of an historical Japanese subject: bijin-ga (beautiful women). Scattering Chrysanthemums – Satsuki is a contemporary woodblockprint produced in collaboration with the Adachi Institute who preserve the traditional Ukiyo-e style print workshop. Ikenaga’s work is beautifully translated into the woodblock medium in this work which preserves his stylistic characteristics of a fine-featured woman swathed in detailed kimono fabrics.
Yasunari Ikenaga was born in Oita Prefecture in 1965. He graduated from the Art Department at Midorigaoka High School attached to the Oita Prefectural College of Arts and Culture in 1984. It was through his own experiments using natural mineral pigments on various materials that he developed his contemporary brand of Japanese-style paintings. He has exhibited his works to great acclaim at art fairs around the country and abroad. In 2014, he published a collection of paintings entitled “Kimi omou hyakuya no kofuku (The happiness of one hundred nights thinking of you)” from Geijutsu Shinbunsha.
